This project was developed and implemented as part of the Digital Fabrication Workshop at the Kyiv National University of Architecture and Construction in 2013.
According to the task of the workshop, students had to develop options for organizing a public space for students to spend their free time in the hall of the faculty building.
The team of this project decided to organize the geometry of the space using the principle of metaballs. In short metaballs are spheres formed from circles lying in three planes. Metaballs are defined by its center and the potential possessed by this center.
For initial data were taken two main parameters:
- determining the location of seats;
- calculation of the intensity of the flow of people.
Thus it was obtained three optimal arrangement schemes and the future shapes of the metaballs.
The final selected scheme
Also we have developed a system for optimizing the amount of used material. The distance between plywood sheets was calculated with a gradient, taking into account the load distribution during the operation of the benches. Thus, to the bottom of the benches, the distances increase, connecting with intermediate shims of different sizes. This technique allowed to significantly reduce the number of plywood sheets, thereby reducing the cost of the final product.
